SONGWRITING COMPETITION FEEDBACK

Heidi Harries – Loved the lyrics which flowed in a very cultured and sophisticated manner. As a performer look to work that stage more so we can connect to your song even more, click here for some tips on performing on stage. It's the type of song that takes a few listens to in order to gage your interest.

Gavin Fitzgerald – It’s a good song and well-structured, just not convinced the hook is strong enough to make this a song with single hit potential and is more of an album track. However it is well presented vocally.

Julie and Josh – A nice song and good harmonies, struggled to relate to it as the context and theme was just too general. Performers would benefit from performing more to really convey the song to its best potential, click here for some tips on performing on stage. Needed a bit more originality, ‘Angel’ is very overused.

Danielle – The song was strong and very contemporary but the performance was weak. Perform more to learn to commit more to performance, click here for some tips on performing on stage. The song really needed an edit and with the lack of performance highlighted what was a weak ending. Try to come up with a hook within the song to make it more interesting, click here for some songwriting tips on how to write a chorus.

Mike Donaghy – Loved the folk vibe and integrity of the song, it sounded like we’ve heard this song before which is a great sign. Engaging, especially with the lyrics. Great story teller!

Bernie Morris – It’s a nice song and a lovely sentiment, but probably would benefit from a modern twist to have a chance to be a potential hit.  The song would benefit from more dynamics in the chord structure to keep the ears perked up throughout, click here for advice on musical dynamics. A song for a beautiful sunny day!

CeeCee – Strong lyrics which it felt you connected well with. The song needs more of a hook to be able to latch on to though.

Tendayi Sutherland – You needed to commit more to the performance and look to extend the dynamic ranges so you can really drive through the chorus, click here for advice on musical dynamics. Need to focus more on delivering the hook in the chorus, click here for some songwriting tips on how to write a chorus. There’s lots of potential in this song, just need to hear it a few more times.

FEEDBACK FOR THE SONGWRITING COMPETITION GRAND FINAL

Yana Williams – Nice song and lots of emotion and passion packed into the song. Liked the change up towards the end of the song to give it a lift. Great sound Yana you have a bright future.

Mark Cousins – Lyrics were fab and depth and range to the vocal really showed this song off to its best potential. Refreshingly different!

Kelly Jenns – Great committed performance with a catchy lift and hook.  Watch your mic control as you have a big voice, but don’t pull it away too far from your mouth, click here for tips on microphone technique for singers. Felt a bit 80’s, could look for a more current production.

John Morgan – A nice song but it lacked something lyrically or instrumentally for that permanent hook which is key for that potential hit, click here for some songwriting tips on how to write a chorus.

Leila Grace – Clever and memorable lyrics. Watch your diction at times, but dynamics and delivery were spot on! Interesting song that deserves listens!

Elena – Your delivery could have been clearer and the song and image didn’t seem compatible. However, the song was decent but is just needs more dynamic change. In particular let the song breathe more so it can drive the chorus harder. With a stronger chorus, this song would improve drastically. Don’t stop writing, there’s talent here!

Lea Nixon – Loved the backing instruments, gave it a real different and original sound. Great harmonies, but it is a little repetitive lyrically and perhaps could have looked to have varied that around lyrically to be even better. This is refreshingly different.

Cayla de Vay – You have lots of potential for your age! Liked the transitions in the song, but the backing track was poor unfortunately. Great melodic chorus- keep on writing!

Graham Lindley – Hearing the song was a little difficult as it was drowned out by the backing. Perhaps it would have been cleaner and easier on the ear if it was more stripped down.

Kirsty Spence – Liked that you smiled and your expression throughout was great. Not that keen on the double tracking of the lyrics at times though.

Tom Frost (Alice Frost) – You have a lovely voice you just need to perform more and learn to add more expression to have better stage presence, click here for some tips on performing on stage.
