Sam Froud – The melody was a good one but lyrically it needed more, click here for songwriting tips – how to write a chorus. Performance wise it would help if you varied the dynamics more to drive through the chorus and also let the song breathe.

Nicole McNally – It would benefit from working the dynamics more. The song suited the ukulele but it can be thin as a backing instrument and perhaps the acoustic guitar could have really shown us the song to its best potential!? Very catchy melody. Nice structure, but I felt like I’d heard the song before.

Southampton Songwriting Contest – Industry Feedback

Emma Burton – Great name for a song and good structure. Liked the theme of the song but it wasn’t as catchy a song as it needs to be to be considered a single. Performance wise look to perform as much as you can so you can learn your craft and better delivery of the song. A good vocal coach can assist you with your tuning to be even better.

Isabelle Whitlock – Good lyrics with meaningful sentiment. The song has potential but you need to perform more to present the song to its best potential and the guitar work needs more chord changes to make the ears perk up more. Performance wise try and give us more emotion and expression of that.

Mysti – The lyrics are a little simplistic where/there/air and it needed more dynamic changes amongst a well meaningful song, click here for tips on musical dynamics.  Look to perform in the instrumental sections otherwise you are missing an opportunity to convey the emotion of the song.

Mike Tulio – It was a little difficult to follow the message of the song and what it was about although the melody and delivery was good! Catchy guitar accompaniment. Great melody and lyric content.

Laura Greaves – Liked the lyrics and structure, try and commit more to the performance and the commitment to the emotion within the song. Better dynamics would also help to drive the chorus. There needs to be a stronger definition between the chorus and the verse, the repetition was the only thing that made it clear.

Bernie Morris – Liked the sentiment in the song but the lyrics didn’t always scan as best as they could so perhaps look to rework them in places. Liked to have heard a more focal chorus. The lyrical content got a bit lost in the loose structure, click here for tips on song structure

Southampton Songwriting Contest – Songwriter’s Feedback

Steve LowisDay One; The violin creates a really earthy and melodic sound. A very easy song on the ear and one you could imagine driving along too. Needed another verse or bridge? You’ve got something reminiscent of Ray Lamontague. Theme for a Dream; Very similar vibe to the first but perhaps a little more commercial and more of a potential hit. Strong lyrics. Great harmonies for the local line being played on the violin. Could feel the emotion throughout.

Charli Brix – You have a sweet sound to your vocal which is a great ability to write in the best tone for your vocal. Not often a fan of cliché lyrics, but you won me over. The song was really good. Sounds like a song you’d hear in a late lounge club setting.

Debbie – It was upbeat but very serious words perhaps a little too personal and you could do with focusing on the hook of the song more. Not sure the lyrics always married up well with the upbeat track. Some structural changes to each section would really help the song, click here for tip on song structure.

Jess Dix – The song needed a stronger tempo and a more complex chord pattern on the keys. More performance will develop your delivery of your songs, there are a lot of Open mic nights that can provide this experience and you will learn to alter your timing and phrasing to make the song delivery to its best potential and make you a more accomplished performer. It was crying out a more upbeat feel- perhaps a club track.

Neil Roberts – Interesting lyrics. It was at points difficult to follow. Use your eyes and facial expression to convey the emotion in the song. It will help us to connect to your message and song.

Alex Attrill – Alex has got a terrific tone to his vocal which gives the presentation of the song its best possible platform. The message is a clear one and the emotion is conveyed well! Strong song, sung with passion. Loved the energy of the chorus. Great dynamics and presentation of the song.
